Leadership Pearland Hosts Education Day: A Deep Dive into Pearland’s Educational Landscape

Pearland, TX – December 6, 2024 – On Tuesday, December 3, 2024, Leadership Pearland

embarked on an insightful and engaging journey through local educational institutions as part of

its annual Education Day event. The event aimed to connect the local community with the

leadership shaping the educational landscape in Pearland and surrounding areas. From

elementary schools to higher education, participants had the unique opportunity to experience

firsthand the diverse educational offerings and hear from influential leaders in the field.

The event began at 8:00 am with a gathering at the Pearland Chamber of Commerce before

participants set out for a full day of tours, presentations, and networking.


Agenda Highlights:


Challenger Elementary School Tour

  • The day kicked off with a tour of Challenger Elementary School, where attendees were greeted by Aliana Wynn, Director of Communications for Pearland ISD, who provided insight into the school’s educational approach and community involvement.

Dawson High School

  • Following the elementary school visit, participants headed to Dawson High School for a tour and a special presentation by Larry Berger, Pearland ISD Superintendent; Crystal Carbone, Pearland ISD Board President; and Mandy Benedix, Pearland ISD Mentor/Volunteer Specialist. The group explored the school’s innovative programs and engaged with faculty and leadership.

JB Hensler Career and Technical School

  • In the afternoon, the tour continued to JB Hensler Career and Technical School in Manvel, where attendees met Renae Rives, Alvin ISD Chief Communications Officer, and toured the Book Bus—a unique mobile literacy initiative. Dr. Daniel Combs, Alvin ISD Chief Financial Officer, provided an informative session on school funding during the lunch break. Lunch was prepared on-site by students of the JBH Culinary Arts program and enjoyed by all at the C.T. Eats Bistro and Bakery.

Higher Education Institutions

  • The final stop of the day took participants to higher education institutions. At University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) Pearland Campus, Dr. Beth Lewis, Associate Vice President/Chief Operating Officer, shared the university’s vision for growth in the community.
  • Following this, Dr. Robert Exley, President of Alvin Community College, offered insights into the college’s mission and programs.
  • The day concluded with a presentation by Dr. Alexander Okwonna, Provost of San Jacinto College, where he highlighted the college’s contributions to workforce development.


A Day of Collaboration and Learning


The event provided Leadership Pearland members with invaluable exposure to the diverse

educational opportunities available in the region. From K-12 to post-secondary education,

Education Day fostered collaboration and dialogue among educators, administrators, and

community leaders, with a shared goal of enhancing the educational experience for all residents.


Leadership Pearland is committed to fostering leadership in the Pearland community by

providing its members with direct access to local decision-makers and a deeper understanding of

key sectors, including education.
